Uncle Moishy began in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. In 1979 their first album appeared in conjunction with the Jewish Education Program. The original band members were Tanenbaum, Zale Newman, and Chaim Shainhouse; Shainhouse left early on, though he composed for and sang on the first few albums.

In 1979, Uncle Moishy and the Mitzvah men became a household phenomenon with the release of their first album. The historical background is that Zale Newman, well known in the ‘kiruv’ world, approached David Golding to produce an adult album under the Suki & Ding Label. Ding’s intuition was that it should be a group for children. Under the musical direction of Suki Berry, they quickly assembled 10 songs and recorded the music with the top New York musicians. Zale brought in Moshe Tannenbaum to be the lead singer while Zale himself was the iconic ‘Uncle Moishy’ speaking voice.

In 2017, Moshe Tanenbaum under new management, producers known as Sonic Duo, released his first independent album titled ‘Welcome!’ In 2018, the ‘All New Uncle Moishy’ Yossi Berktin, with producers Suki and Ding released the character’s 19th album.
